It’s the time of year when the likes of the BRIT Awards, MTV and BBC begin their shortlists for the Artists to look out for in 2017. There’s been some real underrated talents this year who I hope will make it big in 2017 and I’ve created my own top 5 of those to watch out for!
I can see RAYE being one of the realistic ones likely to win the Critics Choice Award or Sound of 2017 poll. She’s recently featured on Jonas Blue’s new single “By Your Side” and she has some great material of her own. “Shhh” is a particular highlight for me. Her sound is really fresh and something I can see taking off in the near future.
04. Tunji Ige
Tunji Ige is the type of artist I can see having a huge crossover Urban hit with the right song. He’s worked with Christine and the Queens on “No Harm Is Done” and she had a fantastic breakthrough year, so maybe it’s his time now? “Bring Yo Friends” and “On My Grind” are two tracks to check out from him. Both staying true to his urban style but with massive commercial appeal as well.
03. Jorja Smith
I think with time, Jorja Smith will be the next big thing! There’s no one really like her out there at the moment so there’s definitely a market for her and her music. Considering she’s still so young and she’s writing incredible songs like “Carry Me Home” and “Blue Lights”, I’m certain she will take off. She’s got too much soul and talent to remain unknown!
02. Terror Jr
This group is already receiving quite a bit of attention because it’s widely rumoured that Kylie Jenner is their lead singer! Personally I don’t think so, they probably would’ve revealed it by now. Other than “Kylie”, there’s two other members in the group – Felix Snow and a guy who used to be part of The Cataracts. Aside from that, their debut EP ‘Bop City’ is fantastic! It’s full of chill vibes and “Come First” is a real highlight. It definitely sounds like a hit in the making, and hopefully it does become one. I expect we’ll be getting even more great tunes from them next year!
01. Bishop Briggs
Bishop has been my favourite new artist this year! She’s released quite a few alt-pop tunes, in particular “Wild Horses”, “River” and “Pray (Empty Gun)”. She’s got a great vibe and the potential to bring her brand of alt-pop into the mainstream. The former two have already racked up a few million views each on YouTube, so there’s clearly a buzz around her already! Bishop seems to be going from strength to strength, and I really hope 2017 will be her breakthrough year.
